The Books of the Law

The first five books of the Bible are called The Pentateuch (five scrolls) or The Law. They establish a foundation of Christ. These five books are the most examined and criticized books of the Old Testament.


Genesis
Who was the author: Moses
Type of writing: The Book of Beginnings
Where it was written: Egypt and Canaan
When it was written: 1450-1410 B.C.
Why it was written: To show the relationship between God and man, before and after the fall into sin, and to demonstrate God’s love for His creation.
Outline of events:
1. Creation (1-2)
2. Fall of Man (3-6)
3. Flood (7-10)
4. Nations (11-50)
Key Verse: “I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.” (Genesis 17:7).


Exodus
Who was the author: Moses
Type of writing: Deliverance from Slavery in Egypt
Where it was written: Somewhere in the Sinai Peninsula
When it was written: 1450-1410 B.C.
Why it was written: To display God’s faithfulness and protection to the promise He made to the nation of Israel.
Outline of events:
1. Moses (1-7)
2. The 10 Plagues (7-13)
3. The Exodus from Egypt (14-18)
4. The Ten Commandments (19-24)
5. Tabernacle and Worship Instructions (25-40)
Key Verse: “Then the LORD said, ‘I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings…Come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:7, 10).


Leviticus
Who was the author: Moses
Type of writing: Law and Duties in Worship
Where it was written: Sinai and Canaan
When it was written: 1445-1444 B.C.
Why it was written: As guidebook for Holy Worship and Holy Living for the Israelites.
Outline of events:
1. Sacrifice and Offerings (1-7)
2. Priesthood (8-10)
3. Clean and Unclean (11-15)
4. Day of Atonement (16)
5. Laws for Holy Daily Living (17-27)
Key Verse: “You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy” (Leviticus 19:2).


Numbers
Who was the author: Moses
Type of writing: History and Census (hence the name Numbers)
Where it was written: Borders of Canaan
When it was written: 1450-1410 B.C.
Why it was written: History of 40 year wandering for rebelling against God.
Outline of events:
1. Census (1-9)
2. Travel from Sinai to Canaan (10-12)
3. Spy, Rebellion and Punishment (13-19)
4. Moab (20-36)
Key Verse: “Surely all the men who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice, shall by no means see the land which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who spurned Me see it“ (Numbers 14:22-23).


Deuteronomy
Who was the author: Moses
Type of writing: Sermons of Moses
Where it was written: Plains of Moab
When it was written: 1407-1406 B.C.
Why it was written: To Reconfirm God’s Promise and Prepare Israel to enter the Promise Land.
Outline of events:
1. Past History (1-11)
2. Present Holiness, Restate the Ten Commandments (12-26)
3. Future Heritage, and Farewell (27-34)
Key Verse: “Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His loving-kindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments” (Deuteronomy 7:9).
